Over twenty years ago, my Mother, Ruth, had wanted to attend a mother-daughter tea with me at Gamma Phi Beta sorority house in Beaumont, Texas.... She started to feel like she had pneumonia, and went to the doctor. After an x-ray, the doctors diagnosed her with lung cancer.
Luckily, due to the early discovery, Mom only had surgery and no chemotherapy or radiation. This was the beginning Mom's journey with cancer...and being a survivor over two decades. Mom had over four bouts with cancer through the years, but with no chemotherapy, and only a little radiation, and minimal pain.
My mother helped take care of my relatives such as my Uncle Glen, Grandma, Aunt Mickie who had suffered with cancer, so we knew how painful it could be, even with morphine. She also helped take care of my father and my grandfather when they were ill and dying.... My greatest fear when she was diagnosed with bone cancer is that she would suffer as my grandma had....but that wasn't to be.
This was the beginning of our journey....
